VICEVERSA

Aftermath is defined by a process of becoming, whether it is through physical transformations or intangible shifts in perception.

The existence of the self-sustaining utopia of ViceVersa is dependent on the ground of the pre-existing island. As the island is progressively excavated, the city itself grows vertically, becoming a membrane. Digitalisation and mechanisation eradicate the need for manual labor. In the presence of ultimate freedom, the inhabitants become gradually detached from the material existence of the island and lost in a hypnotic flânerie.

The quarries and the cities are like negative and positive images of a single photograph.

Within the horizons of chance, effects described by the useful terms serendipity and synergism play crucial roles. An adhocist dares and develops such risky effects as gambles, hopefully in his favor.

This is the opposite of the ‘romantic ruin’. Because the buildings don’t fall into ruin after they are built but rise into ruin before they are built.

By what then are montage and its embryo -the frame- characterized? By collisions. By the conflict of two fragments placed side by by side. By conflict. By collision.

Both biological and cultural evolution proceed as much via exaptation as via adaptation.

That is, the surprising and delightful moments when a new idea or invention results from the sudden and sucessful conjunction of old ones. In short, it focuses on that rare time when creation takes place, just after two or more elements are brought together in a new synthesis, the birth moment, the eureka flash.

The fact that man is capable of action means that the unexpected can be expected from him, that he is able to perform what is infinitely improbable.

Even when the inventory is large, it remains limited. The bricoleur uses what is at hand because that is all that he has. His materials bear no relation to his task because they are themselves the result of previous constructions. Levi-Strauss refers to these materials as ‘preconstrained’.
